Fedora 33 : The new Wine 6.0.

The new released of Wine 6.0 comes with this intro:
The Wine team is proud to announce that the stable release of Wine 6.0 is now available. This release represents a year of development effort and over 8,300 individual changes. It contains a large number of improvements that are listed in the release notes below. The areas of major changes are:
- Core modules in PE format.
- Vulkan backend for WineD3D.
- DirectShow and Media Foundation support.
- Text console redesign. ...

About Wine:
Wine (originally an acronym for "Wine Is Not an Emulator") is a compatibility layer capable of running Windows applications on several POSIX-compliant operating systems, such as Linux, macOS, BSD. Instead of simulating internal Windows logic like a virtual machine or emulator, Wine translates Windows API calls into POSIX calls on-the-fly, eliminating the performance and memory penalties of other methods and allowing you to cleanly integrate Windows applications into your desktop.

I used the Wine repo to install easily this software:
[root@desk mythcat]# dnf config-manager --add-repo https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/fedora/33/winehq.repo
Adding repo from: https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/fedora/33/winehq.repo
[root@desk mythcat]# dnf install wine

I tested with my favorite old game Dune 2000 from this webpage
Just unzip it and run wine with right-click on DUNE2000.EXE and select Open With and Wine Windows Program Loader.
The game runs it well:

About this tool the development team tells us:

DB Browser for SQLite is a high quality, visual, open-source tool to create, design, and edit database files compatible with SQLite. It is for users and developers wanting to create databases, search, and edit data. It uses a familiar spreadsheet-like interface, and you don't need to learn complicated SQL commands.
  • Controls and wizards are available for users to:
  • Create and compact database files
  • Create, define, modify and delete tables
  • Create, define and delete indexes

Best password management tool.

This suite of tools come with many features free and one good premium option.
The Password Tote tools provides secure password management through software and services on multiple platforms and work very well with software downloads for Windows, Mac OS X, Safari, Chrome, Firefox, iOS (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad), Android.
You can download this from downloads page.

Features OutlineFreePremium
Website Access
Browser Extensions
Desktop Software
Mobile Software
Password Sharing
YubiKey Support
PriceFree$2.99 a month or 2 Years at a 16% savings
DescriptionThis will allow you to use the website version completely free. It also gives you access to fill your passwords from the browser extensions. It does not provide access to the desktop software or mobile phone software.Premium gives you access to your passwords from all versions of Password Tote, including the desktop software and mobile phone versions.

Synchronization between browser extensions and utilities is fast and does not confuse the user in navigation. Importing files is fast for the csv file dedicated to dozens of passwords.
A very good aspect was the compromise solution for custom import with a generic csv file.
The utility generates this file and you can fill it with the necessary login data for your web sites.
The other csv import options did not work for me, I guess the problems are incompatible with the other files exported by the dedicated software.
I used it with YubiKey and it worked very well. It's the only utility that allowed me to connect with YubiKey, the other utilities demand a premium version.

How to enable YubiKeys and password tote.
  • First log in to your Password Tote account.
  • Click Account, then Manage YubiKeys. You will arrive at the YubiKey Management page.
  • Click Add YubiKey to register your YubiKey with your Password Tote account.
  • Fill in the required details. If successful, your YubiKey will be displayed in the list as shown in the screen shot below.

The tool Noodl for design and web development.

This tool will help you understand something about data structuring, node building, web development and design.
This application comes with interactive lessons and documentation.
Note: I tested some lessons and are not very easy. Thus, some links between the nodes do not appear with all the labels, unless they are made inversely, in this case on the work surface the links are no longer one-way (with the arrow arrow) but only punctually between the nodes.
It can be downloaded here for the following operating systems :
  • Version 1.2.3 (MacOS)
  • Version 1.2.3 (Win x64 Installer)
  • Version 1.2.3 (Linux x86 64)
Let's see the default interface of Noodl application.

Fedora 25 Alpha - VirtualBox and packer.

NOTE: This project tutorial is not finish. After I install the Fedora and reboot the installation has restart with default iso file. Need to fix this issue.

Today I tested Fedora 25 Alpha under Windows 10 with VirtualBox from Oracle and packer.
The VirtualBox can be found here.
The packer software can be found here.
Because I used Vagrant from here used the default folder vagrant to test Fedora 25 Alpha , see tree command:

C:\HashiCorp\Vagrant\bin>tree
Folder PATH listing
Volume serial number is 0000003D 9A67:3A80
C:.
├───.vagrant
│   └───machines
│       └───default
│           └───virtualbox
├───build
│   └───Fedora_25_Alpha
└───packer_cache
I install VirtualBox the last version and I put packer.exe into bin folder.
The packer use two config files:
- the packer.config - looks for %APPDATA%/packer.config ,if the file doesn't exist, then Packer ignores it and just uses the default configuration;
- the packer.json -I used fedora25alpha.json file for settings.
My fedora25alpha.json file come with this settings:
{ "variables": { "iso_location": "https://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/releases/test/25_Alpha/Workstation/x86_64/iso", "harddisk_size": "40960", "vm_name": "Fedora_25_Alpha", "outputfile": "Fedora_25_Alpha.box", "compression": "6" }, "builders": [{ "vm_name": "{{user `vm_name`}}", "output_directory": "build/{{user `vm_name`}}", "type": "virtualbox-iso", "virtualbox_version_file": ".vbox_version", "headless": false, "guest_os_type": "Fedora_64", "hard_drive_interface": "sata", "disk_size": "{{user `harddisk_size`}}", "iso_url": "{{user `iso_location`}}/Fedora-Workstation-netinst-x86_64-25-Alpha-1.2.iso", "iso_checksum": "ba181dd271cda2ac709a4327258683bc3b6e5635a0fd69548dc6f957d25927d9", "iso_checksum_type": "sha256", "boot_wait": "12s", "http_directory": "http", "guest_additions_path": "VBoxGuestAdditions_{{.Version}}.iso", "ssh_username": "vagrant", "ssh_password": "vagrant", "ssh_port": 22, "ssh_wait_timeout": "10000s", "vboxmanage": [ ["modifyvm", "{{.Name}}", "--memory", "1024"], ["modifyvm", "{{.Name}}", "--cpus", "1"] ], "shutdown_command": "echo 'vagrant'|sudo -S /sbin/halt -h -p" }], "post-processors": [ { "type": "vagrant", "output": "build/{{user `outputfile`}}", "compression_level": "{{user `compression`}}" } ] } I add also the path to the Windows enviroment with powershell:
$env:PACKER_LOG=1
$env:PACKER_LOG_PATH="packerlog.txt"
You can also use the set command to do that.
The next step is to use two commands for packer.
First command will validate your settings and the last command will start the virtualization process:
packer validate fedora25alpha.json
packer build fedora25alpha.json

The output of this is virtual running of Fedora 25 Alpha.

Fedora 24 alpha - VirtualBox and FreeCAD software.

Today I tested the FreeCAD under Fedora 24 alpha with VirtualBox.
First I update my system using the standard updater for your desktop:

sudo dnf update --refresh
sudo dnf install dnf-plugin-system-upgrade
dnf install freecad freecad-data

About this software the official webpage told us: FreeCAD is a parametric 3D modeler made primarily to design real-life objects of any size. Parametric modeling allows you to easily modify your design by going back into your model history and changing its parameters. FreeCAD is open-source and highly customizable, scriptable and extensible.

Is working well and you can read more from here.
I have some problems with sound under my VirtualBox.

I think something block the memory when I try to make some screenshot.

LibreOffice Viewer - tested.

I like LibreOffice because is opensource with a great team development.
Can be used with Windows and Linux.
Today I will told about the Android OS and LibreOffice.
LibreOffice is now available on Android as a native application with this formats:
• Open Document Format (odt, ods and odp);
• Microsoft Office 2007/2010/2013 (docx, xlsx and pptx);
• Microsoft Office 97/2000/XP/2003 (doc, xls and ppt).
Named LibreOffice Viewer comes with a first preview of the editing functionality and is sized to APK:48 MB / App installed:81 MB.
I think is need to improve this application with viewer for epub and some ebook document formats.
This will remove some applications.
Note: Microsoft Office come with 1GB of RAM and also can be used.

Tested the Libre Office software.

Today I tested Libre Office suite. The last version is 5.1.2.2 and has many features.
I like to used because I can export my work under Microsoft Office and also to open document.
You can download it from libreoffice official page.
This software can be used with many ope systems, like:
You have LibreOffice come with Impress, Calc , Writer, Math and Draw to deal with any type of issue.  I don't like for example the way to rename the macro. You need to go to : Tools -Macros -Organize Macros -LibreOffice Basic.. the Organizer button and finally double click to the name of the macros , rename and close. I think this come from permisions of the macros.
Also You can deal with macros what do you want. For example in this example I delete some fields from one document - one matrix make from A3 to B10.
  Dim myDoc As Object
  Dim mySheet As Object
  Dim myCell As Object
  Dim myRange As Object
  Dim myFlags As Long

  myDoc = ThisComponent
  mySheet = myDoc.Sheets(0) ' Refers to Sheet1 as in 0, 1, 2 etc
  myRange = mySheet.getCellRangeByName("A3:B10")

  myFlags = com.sun.star.sheet.CellFlags.VALUE + _
      com.sun.star.sheet.CellFlags.DATETIME + _
      com.sun.star.sheet.CellFlags.STRING + _
      com.sun.star.sheet.CellFlags.ANNOTATION + _
      com.sun.star.sheet.CellFlags.FORMULA + _
      com.sun.star.sheet.CellFlags.HARDATTR + _
      com.sun.star.sheet.CellFlags.STYLES + _
      com.sun.star.sheet.CellFlags.OBJECTS + _
      com.sun.star.sheet.CellFlags.EDITATTR

  myRange.clearContents(myFlags)
This is a simple type of macro using LibreOffice Basic language. You can also use Python , BeanShell, JavaScript.
So if you like this software and you want to survive this software, you can make a donation of at least 5 USD.

LibreOffice is Free Software and is made available free of charge. Your donation, which is purely optional, supports our worldwide community. If you like the software, please consider a donation.

News: The skin display.

I don't like to post about hardware, but this news is great. I hope will see soon into the market.
The news comes from the University of Tokyo's Graduate School of Engineering developed a mechanical flexible and stretchable "e-skin" film through the use of an organic light-emitting diode display.
The total thickness of the devices, including the substrate and encapsulation layer, is 3 microns, or three-thousandths of a millimeter.

GIF file animated with open-source software.

I tested the Blender 3D version 2.76 with Inkscape and Synfig to make this GIF animated.
This is the result :

I used the default cube from Blender 3D to make a SVG image.
Also I working with Synfig software to create this GIF.
I will make one good tutorial about this GIF.
I hope this will help you to find new ways to deal with the open-source software.
